CBD AND THERAPEUTIC ALLEGATIONS: disclosing THE TRUTH

Posted on: April 16th 2019

As the CBD vape market continues to grow, the cannabidiol molecule is subject to more unproven therapeutic and health allegations. Marie Jeanne helps you to understand.

What do we mean by therapeutic allegations?

According to the French National Agency for Food, Environmental and Occupational Health Safety (ANSES), an allegation is a message appearing on some food packaging that refers to the product's properties.

There are 3 types of allegations: :

Nutritional: referring to the nutrient content of food;

Health: stating a link between a nutrient and a health condition, e.g. reduction of a risk factor;

Therapeutic: prevention or cure of a disease, reserved for medicines only.

CBD is not recognised as a medicine and therefore cannot be the subject of therapeutic allegations. However, many studies have looked into its pharmacological properties.

CBD's proven properties

First of all, CBD is different from THC, the euphoric molecule of cannabis. CBD is not a narcotic and has no psychotropic effect. The general tendency in France is still to associate these molecules. Consequently, CBD still a subject that is often avoided in media.

Nonetheless, the scientific community has already reviewed the issue in-depth, including inhaling CBD. The French E-Liquid Laboratory (LFEL), the flagship institution, has extensively investigated CBD and its pharmacological properties in its study "CBD and its effects". The LFEL lists the effects of CBD already demonstrated by the scientific community (page 7 of the document).

None of these studies presents CBD as a miracle cure for diseases. They are scientific researches aimed primarily to evaluate CBD potential use and toxicological risk.

Warning:

  • CBD is not a medicine.
  • CBD has not "medical recognised" effects and should be consumed in moderation.
  • CBD can cause drowsiness in case of overdose. We advise you to not consume it before driving.
